The exit ticket expectation
Colombia admits most visitors without a visa for tourism. Migración Colombia can ask arriving travellers to demonstrate onward travel, and airlines flying into Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena ask for it at check-in from passengers holding one-way bookings.
As elsewhere, the airline is the more consistent gatekeeper, because it carries the cost of a passenger refused entry. Travellers who plan to buy an onward ticket once they arrive frequently discover the problem at the departure counter instead.
Alongside this, most travellers must complete the Check-Mig registration online in the window before arrival and before departure. It is an immigration formality and it does not address onward travel.
The annual cap that catches long-stay travellers
Colombia's tourist permission is granted for a period on arrival and can usually be extended, but total tourist time is capped across a calendar year. Travellers who have already spent months in the country earlier in the year cannot reset the clock by leaving briefly and returning.
Colombia has become a long-stay hub for remote workers, so this rule affects a growing share of visitors. If you are in that group, count the days you have already used this year before choosing a date.

Extending, and what it does not cover
The tourist permission granted on arrival can usually be extended once through Migración Colombia, which is why so many visitors plan longer stays than the initial stamp suggests. The extension is applied for inside the country, online or at an office, and it is not automatic.
Two things it does not do. It does not lift the annual cap, since the extended time still counts towards the same yearly total. And it does not help you at a check-in desk before you fly, because the agent is looking at the entry you are about to make, not a permission you may obtain later.
Digital nomads and longer stays
Colombia introduced a dedicated visa for remote workers, aimed at people who want to stay beyond what the tourist route allows. It is a different category with its own application, income evidence and documentation, and it removes the annual-cap problem that catches long-stay tourists.
If your plan is several months of remote work rather than a holiday, that route is worth investigating before you arrive. Arriving as a tourist and trying to convert later is harder than applying for the right category from the start, and no flight booking solves a category mismatch.
