Two different routes, two different requirements
Vietnam entry splits into two situations, and confusing them is why some travellers over-prepare and others get stopped at a check-in desk.
E-visa. Vietnam operates an online visa for a broad list of nationalities, applied for through the government's e-visa portal. The form asks for passport details, a photo, a photo page scan, your intended entry and exit dates and the port of entry you will use. It does not ask you to upload a flight booking. What it does require is that you name the checkpoint you will arrive at, and that you arrive through it.
Visa exemption. Some nationalities can enter for a set number of days without a visa. There is no application and no document upload, which is exactly why airlines take on the checking role themselves.
Where the check actually happens
For a visa-exempt traveller, the airline is the gatekeeper. Carriers are responsible for passengers refused entry at the other end, so their agents ask for proof of departure before boarding. That is a commercial decision by the airline, applied at the check-in counter, and it is far more consistently enforced than any check at the Vietnamese border.
What satisfies it is a confirmed booking showing you leaving Vietnam before your visa-free period expires. It does not have to be a flight home, and it does not have to be a flight at all in every case, though a flight reservation is the form agents are used to seeing and the fastest to resolve.

- Your name exactly as in the passport
- A real booking reference that an agent can verify
- A flight departing from Vietnam, to any destination
- A departure date inside your permitted stay, whether that is the e-visa validity or the visa-free allowance for your nationality

Dates and extensions
Two rules avoid most problems:
- Depart before the permitted stay ends. A booking dated after your allowance expires is not proof of compliance, it is evidence of a planned overstay. Agents notice.
- Do not rely on extending. Extensions exist but they are discretionary, and no airline agent will accept an intention to extend in place of a departure booking.
If you are entering on an e-visa, match the exit date on your booking to the validity printed on the approval rather than to the length you originally asked for.
